Endurance Work
Completed a single sustained creative project that took 6+ months of continuous work, a novel, album, feature film, large sculpture, body of paintings.
The idea
Six months on one piece will break enthusiasm at least three times. Plan for it. The discipline is showing up on the days the work feels pointless and the end isn't visible. Most long projects die in month three, when novelty is gone and the deadline is far. The kid who keeps showing up in month three is the one who finishes. That's the only difference.
Steps
- Set the deadline 6+ months out. Calendar it. Tell people.
- Schedule weekly work blocks. Treat them like a job.
- Plan for the month-three crisis. Have a response ready.
- Finish at the deadline. Imperfect finished beats infinite unfinished.
What counts
A single project finished after 6+ months of continuous work. The finished piece plus a few progress photos is plenty.
