Ordered for Yourself

Ordered your own food at a restaurant, counter, or drive-thru, speaking to the adult working, without a parent stepping in.

The idea

The hardest part is the silence after the kid says their order. Most will look over at the parent. Don't bail them out. Even if they fumble the words or the cashier misunderstands, let them recover on their own. The recovery is the actual milestone, not the order. Parents who jump in here teach the kid adults will rescue them, which delays this skill by years.

Steps
  1. Stand in front of the kid at the counter, not next to them.
  2. Let the kid say the order. If the cashier looks confused, wait.
  3. At the total, the kid pays. Don't translate.
  4. Receipt to the kid.
What counts

Your kid ordered and paid at a counter without an adult speaking. A photo of the meal is plenty.
