Built a Real Mentor Relationship

Identified an adult mentor outside your family, reached out cold, and sustained a real relationship with them over at least 6 months, documented by the mentor.

The idea

Mentor relationships live or die on the follow-up. After the first meeting, send a thank-you within 24 hours referencing one specific thing. Every two months, share an update on something done with their advice. Six months of that beats any amount of cold outreach. Mentors give to kids who actually show up. Most kids ask for advice once and disappear, which is why they never get the second meeting.

Steps
  1. Identify a mentor outside the family. Cold outreach with a specific ask.
  2. First meeting: leave with one thing to act on.
  3. Within 24 hours: thank-you note referencing one specific thing.
  4. Every two months for six months: progress update.
What counts

A 6+ month mentor relationship with documented follow-ups, confirmed by the mentor. A note from the mentor is plenty.
