Built Something From a Plan

Followed a set of instructions, a kit, a recipe, a tutorial, a LEGO set with 500+ pieces, and finished a working end product that matches the plan.

The idea

The discipline is following the instructions when you're sure you know a better way. Read every step. Lay out the parts before you start. Kids who improvise from step one end up frustrated halfway through with a half-built thing they can't finish. Your kid needs to feel what it costs to disrespect a working plan before they get to write their own.

Steps
  1. Read the entire instructions before touching a piece. Most kids miss the step that explains step 4.
  2. Lay out all the parts on a flat surface. Find missing pieces now, not at step 47.
  3. Don't improvise. If the plan says clamp for an hour, clamp for an hour.
  4. Compare the finished build to the picture. Find the three things that differ.
What counts

A working end product matching the plan. A photo of the finished thing next to the instructions is plenty.
