Learned to Swim
Swam across a pool, shallow to deep end, any stroke, without a floatie, an adult holding you, or stopping.
The idea
Don't carry them through the water. The feet need to find the bottom on their own at least once. The whole shift from non-swimmer to swimmer is the moment your kid puts their face in and realizes they don't sink. Stand close. Hands off. Let the water do the teaching. Parents who hover here make the kid afraid for years longer than they needed to be.
Steps
- Spend time putting face under in shallow water.
- Float with no help. The body learns it doesn't sink.
- Add a stroke. Any stroke. Form comes later.
- Swim the length without stopping or grabbing.
What counts
Your kid swam shallow to deep without help or stopping. A photo from the deep end is plenty.
