Built a Tool a Friend Used
Built an AI-powered tool that a friend or family member actually used to solve a real problem for themselves.
The idea
The friend is the milestone, not the tool. Building something useful means a second user existed and chose to use it. Watch the handoff: do they explain enough, do they assume too much, do they update based on the friend's feedback. Most kid projects never reach a second user. Reaching one is the moment engineering becomes a product, which is the actual skill being built.
Steps
- Pick a real problem someone has. Talk to them.
- Build the AI-powered tool that solves it.
- Hand it off. Watch them use it without coaching.
- Iterate based on what they did.
What counts
A tool used by someone other than your kid to solve a real problem. A short demo and a user sentence are plenty.
